Treating eczema naturally

Treating eczema naturally

Eczema can make your skin dry, red, flaky, and especially itchy. And the annoying thing is that it often comes in waves—a period of calm, then suddenly a flare-up. In practice, "natural treatment" means: restoring your skin barrier, minimizing irritants, and having your flare-up plan in order.

Important: in case of a real flare-up, "natural" is sometimes not enough. Guidelines emphasize that basic ointment/emollients are the foundation and that for flares, a medicated ointment (corticosteroid) may be needed via a GP/dermatologist.

What do we mean by "natural" in eczema?

Not: "a miracle cure for eczema."
Rather: a skin routine that is as mild as possible and helps calm your skin:

  1. Restore barrier (apply daily)

  2. Mild cleansing (short, lukewarm, without harsh soap)

  3. Limit triggers (perfume, friction, heat/sweat, stress, frequent washing)

  4. Break the itch-scratch cycle (cooling, covering, routine)

Step 1: Ointment is the basis (even if your skin is calm)

For eczema, a basic ointment/emollient is essential:

  • Apply at least once a day, more often if your skin is dry.

  • Apply even when the eczema is gone (maintenance).

  • Always apply after showering or bathing (preferably immediately after).

Naturally extra: choose products with a short, gentle ingredient list and without perfume/irritating additives.
